In recent years, we have seen an increasing demand for home DIY products. This shows that many owners would prefer to improve their own house rather than to just leave it to a team of strangers to do it. One of the most popular product is the home window film as owners find it able to offer many practical solutions to almost every single problem related to their glass windows.

In general, you can buy two types of window coating films in the market. The first type is adhesive-based and the second type is adhesive-free. The latter type is now fast replacing the former type due to its ease of installation and removal.

This is what you need to install the adhesive-free window films: a squeegee, a spray bottle filled with soapy solution and a utility knife. First, you have to clean the glass surface of any dust and paints. You may need a scrapper to remove any paints that have stuck to the glass surface.

Spray the glass surface wet with the soapy solution. Then, remove the backing paper and place the film on the glass surface and allow it to “float”. Spray more soapy solution on the surface of the glass film. Use a squeegee to squeeze out all soapy solution and air bubbles from beneath the glass films. Trim off excess window film and you are done. All this should be completed within 15 minutes even for an amateur.

When starting to shop for window films, home owners are surprised by the availability of the many designs. Most owners have difficulty in choosing the suitable type of window films. You will be able to make a right choice if you keep yourself focused on the purpose or function of the window film.

If your purpose is to add privacy, you can consider either one of the following window films: window tinting films, opaque glass film, etched glass film and stained glass film. In the past, most owners would just settle for window tinting film because of limited choices. Window tinting film will make your room look dark and not all home owners are comfortable with it.

Instead of using window tinting film, you can consider using those designs that make your window opaque such as the frosted window film. Frosted window film is actually opaque meaning that it will completely block off any view. However, it is also translucent, meaning that it will allow light to pass through. This is definitely a better solution compared to window tinting film.

If you wish to make your décor even more interesting, consider using etched glass films on the shower doors. There are many types of designs available. The Monte Carlo designs add elegance to your shower door if it opens directly into a walk-in wardrobe, for example. Stained glass film works well on bathroom windows.

There are many possible and creative ways in working with stained glass films. Consider using them only on alternate window panes or on the top row if you have a 6-pane or 9-pane windows framed by wood. Installing stained glass films on every single window of your house may not go well with the overall appearance of the house.

Window films come with many benefits too. They can block off UV ray up to more than 90% and this help to prolong the life of your upholstery, furniture and carpet. They also help to keep heat out of the house and reduce glare. Because of that, houses installed with window glass films are usually more energy efficient as heat is not only kept out of the house during summer, but it is retained during winter so that you do not need to turn up your heater.

There are many ways to buy window films. You can buy them from online store or from a hardware store. You must insist on warrantee from the manufacturer when buying from them. Many online store also offers “no question asked” return policy if you are not happy with the product. This is an indication of the merchant’s commitment to your satisfaction and usually they are reliable.
